Torrijas
This fried bread dessert is another sweet favorite for lovers of Spanish or Mexican cuisine. Unbeatable.
Instructions
Slice an uncut loaf of wheat bread into thick slices and place in a shallow pan.
Mix milk and sugar and pour over the sliced bread, distributing evenly.
Leave to stand for a few minutes until the bread soaks the liquid.
Whisk the eggs well. Dip the bread slices into the mixture, coating them well.
Fry them to a crisp, golden brown and top with honey.
Notes
The bread should be moist but not too much. If the bread soaks too much liquid, it falls apart.
Spanish torrijas are cooked in the same way, but they are usually topped with home made syrup, or plain sugar, instead of honey. These are often sprinkled with ground cinnamon
Variations
For more flavor, add sugar and 1 cinnamon stick to the milk, warm to near boiling point and allow to cool to room temperature before pouring over the bread.
Pour home made syrup and ground cinnamon over the cooked torrijas.
Feeling adventurous? Add a little rum or brandy to the warmed milk.
