Pepernoten

Pepernoten are eaten in the Netherlands when Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pieten are coming to Holland to visit all the Dutch kids. His birthday,  celebrated on the fifth day of December, is a huge holiday.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter
1⁄2 cup brown sugar
1⁄2 cup sugar (white)
1 tablespoon milk
1 cup flour (self raising)
4 teaspoons mixed spice (speculaas mix)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 320°F (160°C)
  2. Cream the butter and sugar. Add the speculaas spice mix.
  3. Incorporate the flour and milk to make a dough. Make very very small, marble sized, balls.
  4. Bake on the middle rack for 10-15 minutes, until golden.

Notes

Speculaas spice mix

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg;
1 teaspoon ground cloves;
1 teaspoon cinnamon;
1/2 teaspoon ground aniseed;
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
