Portugal

Food and wine in Portugal.

Madeira wine

Madeira is one of the most extraordinary wines in the world, and one of the least understood. Produced on a small Portuguese island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it is a fortified wine that has been deliberately heated as part of its production — a process that sounds counterintuitive but results in a wine of remarkable complexity, striking acidity, and almost mythical longevity. A well-made Madeira does not just age well. It is, for practical purposes, indestructible.

Port wine

Port is one of the most celebrated wines in the world — and one of the most misunderstood. Many people know it only as a sweet red wine served in a small glass at the end of dinner. While that is a perfectly accurate description of one style, it barely scratches the surface of a wine family that ranges from bone-dry white aperitifs to some of the most complex and long-lived bottles in existence.

Food in Portugal

Portugal, a small yet influential country on the Iberian Peninsula, boasts a rich and diverse food culture that has been shaped by its long history, geographical location, and the seafaring traditions of its people. The country's cuisine is characterized by fresh, flavorful ingredients, hearty dishes, and an abundance of seafood.

Flan

A tasty, sweet and soft European tradition, now with a Central American twist as it is made with evaporated milk and baked.

Feijoada

A hearty bean dish in the best Brazilian and Portuguese traditions. Not only beans, count on finding almost every part of the pork, including sausages, and some beef.
