Steckerlfisch
Description
Two whole grilled mackerel lie side by side on a live-edge wooden board, each threaded lengthways onto a flat wooden skewer that projects out of the mouth towards the camera — the Steckerlfisch of the Bavarian beer gardens. The skin is blistered and burnished from the grill, silver-grey over the belly darkening to bronze and charred black along the back and in the diagonal score marks cut into the flanks; the heads are intact, mouths open around the sticks, eyes clouded from the heat.
Around them the table is dressed as a Wiesn stand: a bunch of bright pink radishes with leaves at the top left, three lemon wedges beside the fish, a sprig of flat-leaf parsley at the front, a glass bowl of shredded cabbage and carrot salad at the right edge, and a salted pretzel in the bottom right corner. Two wooden-handled table knives and a fork rest across the board, a blue-and-white Bavarian lozenge napkin sits under the fish, and a tall glass of pale beer and a wicker basket are softly out of focus behind. Warm light on weathered planks.
Suitable as a lead image for Steckerlfisch and grilled-fish features, Oktoberfest and beer-garden food guides, mackerel and oily-fish recipes, outdoor grilling and festival-food pieces, and beer-pairing articles reaching beyond pork. Horizontal, densely styled, best used full-width.
