Pandanus
Description
The picture shows the pandanus fruit. The Maldivian pandanus, locally known as Lhos Gas, is a tropical tree that thrives in the Maldives' coastal environment. Scientifically referred to as Pandanus tectorius, this tree is notable for its long, sword-like leaves and its ability to stabilize sandy soils, making it vital for protecting the islands from erosion.
Its fruits, which resemble pineapples, are edible and used in traditional Maldivian cuisine. The red portion of the ripe fruit is often eaten raw or processed into sweet dishes like kashiko bondibaiy (a dessert made with rice and sugar) and kashiko baypeen (a sweet soup). The leaves are also utilized for weaving mats, baskets, and other handicrafts.
